The Problem
This bathroom remodel required a rigorous, down-to-the-studs rough demolition to address an outdated and poorly executed previous installation. During the teardown, it became immediately apparent that the original installers had skipped critical industry-standard steps, leading to a compromised substrate and a tile floor that was alarmingly easy to remove due to lack of proper mortar coverage. The homeowners desired a complete modernization featuring vibrant colors, custom stone seating, and a highly durable, 100% waterproof foundation.
The Solution
Castle Stone + Tile completely rebuilt the shower enclosure from the framing up. We implemented a rigorous multi-step waterproofing process before installing striking 3”x12” glossy green tiles in a modern vertical straight-stack layout. To elevate the luxurious feel of the space, we fabricated and installed custom solid stone slabs to cap the newly built shower bench and curb. The final design was tied together with a beautifully detailed stone niche, gold trim profiles, and a classic basketweave mosaic across the main bathroom floor.
Contractor Pro-Tip: The Importance of Back Buttering
A beautiful tile job is only as good as the mortar coverage beneath it. During the demolition phase of this exact project, we found a perfect example of what happens when corners are cut.

When a tile is not properly “back-buttered” (the process of applying a flat layer of thinset directly to the back of the tile before pressing it into the combed mortar on the floor/wall), it fails to achieve the 80-95% coverage required by industry standards. In the referenced photo, you can clearly see the clean grid lines on the back of the removed tile—proving it barely made contact with the mortar. This leads to hollow spots, cracked tiles, and premature failure. At Castle Stone + Tile, we rigorously back-butter our large format tiles to guarantee a permanent, rock-solid bond.
